Can You Play a Full 18 Holes on a Simulator? How Long Does It Take?
Share
Yes. A full 18-hole round on a golf simulator is one of the most normal things you can do in a bay — and it's significantly faster than the same round outdoors. The only real question is how much bay time to book.
How Long Does 18 Holes on a Simulator Take?
Roughly half the time of an outdoor round. Here's the honest math:
- Solo: 60–90 minutes. Most single players finish a full 18 in about an hour.
- Two players: about 2 hours.
- Three players: about 2.5–3 hours.
- Four players: 3–4 hours.
That's why a 2-hour bay is the sweet spot for one or two golfers, three players should book 3 hours, and a foursome should take the 4-hour bay. You can always extend if the bay is free, but planning around these numbers means nobody's watching the clock on hole 14.
Why Is It So Much Faster?
Everything that slows down a real round disappears indoors. There's no walking between holes, no searching for balls in the rough, no waiting on the slow foursome ahead of you, and no standing around while someone reads a putt from three angles. Your ball is back in play instantly after every shot. Most simulators also let you set a gimme circle — putts inside a chosen distance are conceded automatically — which shaves another 20–30 minutes off a full round.
The Honest Limitations
Simulator golf is real golf in the ways that matter most: your distances, dispersion, and shot shapes are measured, not estimated, and the launch monitor has no interest in flattering you. But two things don't fully carry over. First, putting — sim putting works fine mechanically, but nothing replicates reading a real green with your feet and eyes. Second, uneven lies and wind — you're always hitting off a flat mat in still air, so the course-management skills of a windy day don't get tested. If you want those gaps closed, nothing replaces time with a coach.
How to Make a Sim Round Count
Don't just play — practice with intent. Use the round to lock in your distance gapping: note what your 7-iron actually carries when there's no pressure, and write it down. Play courses you've never seen to practice course management without a $150 tee time on the line. And if the same miss shows up on holes 5, 11, and 16, that's your launch-monitor data telling you exactly what to work on.
